Short Term:
Global Exchange www.globalexchange.org offers a variety of 'Reality Tours' in countries around the world. Generally lasting two weeks, they are a good introduction to issues affecting local people's lives. The amenities (housing, food, and transportation) tend to be more comfortable than CPT delegations, but may leave some travelers feeling less connected with the location.
Christian Peacemaker Teams www.cpt.org offers delegations to places where they have established peace teams, such as Palestine and Iraq. These trips are 'bargain-basement,' (mats on the floor, group cooking, local taxis and lots of walking) offered from a moderate Christian perspective, and emphasize shadowing the work of the full-time team. Opportunities for independent travel around the region are possible, although staying on with the team is less likely in most situations.
Fellowship of Reconciliation www.forusa.org This organization offers ‘Interfaith Peacebuilder Delegations’ which are similar in structure to the Global Exchange offerings. Locations may differ.
Each of these programs may offer academic credit for participation in a two-week delegation through their own program, or you may often arrange for independent study with your academic advisor. A benefit of participating in these programs for academic credit is that you should be able to apply financial aid such as student loans to the costs.
